Class of 1965
50th YEAR REUNION!!!
October 23-25, 2015
********************************** REUNION COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN'S UPDATE ~~~From Eddie Sasser, Reunion Chairman~~~ CCHS Class of 1965, The entire Committee for the Class of '65 Reunion thanks each of you for your attendance and support for our reunion. You were a great crowd for all of the events. It was an incredible weekend and went much as we hoped. The best part was of course the chance to see old friends and renew the bonds of being from a small school in the South. My wife is still in shock at how close we all seemed to be and how much we knew about each other. Now that I look back, I have but one regret and that is that we were gone for many of the years that quite a few of you were there to keep in touch. We are trying to capture pictures from everyone and Jim is still working his magic to post as much of it online as he can. Please help us by sending any photos you took. Second, we have been polling what to do for the future. Most want to have at least a small annual gathering which is not too formal and perhaps bigger ones every one, three or five years. We also believe some might enjoy doing small gatherings on cruises or trips to destinations which are not too far away, like the mountains and Florida beaches or even meetings at Stans in Woodbine.. Please send us your ideas and let us know if you would be willing to help organize future smaller events even in your home town. Last, again I want to think all of the classmates that were involved in making this a memory that we will carry in our hearts forever. I look forward to seeing all of The Class of 1965 again -- and soon! Eddie ****************************************************************************** ********************************************

Who are the two Class of '65 luminaries pictured here???
Hint: They were a legendary pair in those days...
UPDATE:
Janice Joiner Turner correctly ID'd the handsome (happy) lad as Danny Aldridge
Gary Brenner correctly ID'd the young and beautiful girl as GAIL WITT !!!
How is it that those Woodbine kids got this before St.M. kids could guess???
(...and I still wonder if their Moms were able to get that pine tar from that freshly cut pine tree out of those nice school clothes???!!)

Rememba???
...This is kinda~sorta what the first glimpse of our Little Red Brick Schoolhouse in Woodbine looked like when we would get off the bus early in the morning, with the sun coming up over the rooftop... eyes bloodshot from staying up late doing homework for Mrs. Brock or Mrs. Stanfield...
...But most certainly NOT from staying up and watching the TV all night, because the thamned ding "signed off" with the NATIONAL ANTHEM at about midnight ...(All THREE stations!)
CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT???!!!
Do ya think your grandkids could even comprehend that??!!

BELOW: OK... this one below TAKES THE CAKE!!! Janice Joiner Turner speculates it was some sort of "Nursery Rhyme Costume Day" ...for goodness sakes!
The girls are precious, BUT... Frankly, if I were either one of those THREE BOYS, I'd "lawyer-up" and sue that teacher... and the Principal ...and the School Board ... my PARENTS AND even my GRANDPARENTS (for having children who would dress up their son like that and send him off to school)!!!
As for the "guessing game" ...I am NOT going to ask anyone to guess at who these poor rascals are. No sir! Not me... it ain't happen'n! ...I strongly s'spect it would be a good way for a fella to get his butt whipped by one of them North Camden Boys... even 50 years later!!!! ...So, lets just guess who the girls are and spare them boys the humiliation ... or RE-humiliation, as it were.
(Psssst!!! ...Don't you agree, Billy Clark, John Harvin Quarterman and Wendell Harrell???) UPDATE: Ginny says the boy was Jimmy Porter... NOT Wendell Harrell.... ('Cause on that Exxxxxxtra-Special day, our esteemed classmate was "Wee~Willie~Wendell~Winkie!!!) That certainly explains a lot.
Thanks for the picture Janice!!!

Susan Smith Simmons correctly identified them...
GARY BRENNER is escorting ANDREA STRICKLAND on the Easter-egg hunt!
Who are these two future Class of '65 notables?...
Hint: The boy has always been tall and handsome and that pretty little country girl tom~boy is not much bigger now than she was in the 2nd grade! Go for it!!! Cleve Merrow was the first to correctly ID them... Martie Brannen and Mike Jordan... sitting on Martie's front porch on Bailey Street, St. Marys, circa 1954/55. It's Christmas, 1952... and two excited brothers from St. Marys are taken to Cohen's in Jacksonville to sit on the knee of a very tired Santa Claus~~~ where they will ask him to bring a BB Gun for big brother on Christmas morn. One will be CCHS Class of '65 and the other, Class of '64. (Yes, I did say; COHEN Brother's Department Store. Our friends of the Jewish faith will tell you,"CHRISTMAS is the best holiday EVER, for Jewish merchants!")
And, just so you know... The INEVITABLE errant BB-shot from that Daisy Model #25 Red Ryder Carbine (with the Raw Hide tassel) was surgically removed from the sub-orbital eye socket of the younger brother 61 years later so that he could have an MRI procedure!!!~~~ (See sequel to this exciting story below.)
Yeah... Mama was right when she said, "YOU'LL PUT YOUR (BROTHER'S) EYE OUT!!!"
So... Who are "Bugsy & Spike Malone" in this picture???
Cleve Merrow got it right!.. Dickey and Jimmy Goodman

So... After carrying that copper-jacketed BB-shot just a few centimeters beneath his left eye for 61 years... The excited little boy in the center of the picture above, sitting on Santa's knee, helping plead his brother's case for a Daisy Red Ryder "YOU'LL-PUT-YOUR-EYE-OUT-DAMMIT-DICKEY!!" Model #25 Carbine (with the Raw Hide tassel) ...appears none the worse for wear at age 66 in the picture at left ...two days after having the BB removed. Yes, I kept the BB. It was pitted and the lead was leaking out of it into my body. (Hey now!... That could explain why I can't remember $hite!)
Annnnyyyywaaaayyy... The doctor said the BB would have to be surgically removed before an MRI could be undertaken, because it might contain steel which would react to the magnetism. ...Something about the potential for the little bugger to heat up to glowing red hot from the super-magnetic field force... then accelerating in harmonic resonance with the magnet rotation (and, incidentally, stirring up brain matter along the way) before reaching terminal velocity and eventually rocketing out of my skull, dragging a puree'd mass of steaming brains, eyeballs, inner-ear components and other associated viscera with it ...and ultimately spattering everything in the Radiology Suite with road-kill grade carnage. He said I wouldn't like it very much ...Damned sure took his word for it. (To be sure, it was entirely my fault for mishandling the BB gun, no fault of Dickey's. He felt very badly about it.) JG

Don't even have to ask who this is....
Gee, Martha~Sue you sure are good at this game... BUT, Do you really think we have to tell anyone who this is???
Let's just let it ride and see if anyone really doesn't know...
Maybe if the beautiful gown was not so long, we could see if she has "struck" that trade-mark heel-and-toe pose again.

OK... There's always SOMEONE who will take a thing very literally... I asked for "old pictures" and THIS is what I got.
Fair is Fair... So I'll give you a hint, in case you can't recognize him from this "very early" photo. ...and for goodness sakes I sure HOPE you can't.
HINT: He was (and is) an all-around good guy. He played Defense on the CCHS Football Team and his jersey number was 72... GAME ON!!!
Just as an observation... The average number of these little "swimmers" which are, shall we say "released" during a, hmmmm, during a, uhhhh... Let's just say when the "DEED" is DONE. Anyway... 100 million of these little "squirts" are trying to be the ONE which gets to that egg FIRST...
So, If this ONE beat out ALL of the other 99,999,999 swimmers... It kinda makes you wonder about the rest of THEM !!!

Our very own "High-Flying" Classmate is now a "COVER GIRL" !!!
Susan and Al own a high-tech motorized glider along with several other aircraft and compete in events all over the US.
AVIATRIX AEROGRAM Magazine had this to say about our Susan...
"Susan Simmons: 67-year-old lady who didn't let being a little old lady stop her from becoming a glider pilot at age 62, after becoming a powered airplane pilot at age 60; since retiring 4 years ago she's achieved multiengine and seaplane ratings and has even flown a Mustang jet."

Al Simmons, (Susan Smith, CCHS '65) won 1st Place Trophy, Senior Men's Division in New Jersey's 6-Mile State to State "Paddle Paloozza" 2015, Saturday Sept. 12th. Actually... he swept the entire event!!!
Way to show 'em, Al !!! There never was any doubt that you're the MAN to teach us how it's done....
Nice trophy, Ironman Al, but don't take that classic VW "surf-wagon" off of it to play in the sandbox, Al!

Just as a note... On a recent visit to St. Marys, Al left Pat Brodie's home and took a leisurely bike ride... To Fernandina, down the Amelia Trail to the American Beach area and BACK. THEN he took a jog... into St. Marys and back just to cool down.
The man is an ANIMAL !!!

We are still searching for the whereabouts of one Andy Pritchard... He was last seen in the back of an ambulance comforting Pat as she was on her way to the hospital to have that extra toe removed from her right foot!
If YOU , or anyone you know, can tell us the location of Andy Pritchard, please contact the Reunion Planning Committee.... 'Cause Pat ain't talking... (Probably for the FIRST time in her life!)

Since PlayBoy has decided to END publication of its slick-page printed magazine... (you know, the one with all those interesting ARTICLES we all love to READ... sigh...)...
Here are six hometown beauties who beat all of Hugh Hefner's girls hands down...
Apparently, the Girls had a "Pajama Party" in the Home Ec room back in the day at Old CCHS...
(Did any of you guys get an invitation to this???)

ABOVE: Walt Hooks and Bill Freund prepare for LAUNCH "back in the day" at CCHS... no doubt with one of Wendell Harrell's "Bug-a-Nuats" strapped inside...
If you missed Walt's launch Saturday after the Memorial Service, the rocket motor was about 20 times larger and it soared to an estimated 400-450 feet and deployed its parachute perfectly. ...A very fitting capstone to the Memorial Service. Thanks Walt!!!
P.S. The Class of 1965's 50th Reunion Rocket now resides in a 60 foot Georgia Pine in the backyard of the former Joiner residence across from the school. We still take great delight in "leaving our mark" on Camden!

UPDATE:
Welllllll..... So much for "leaving our mark on Camden..."
Apparently the wind and rains dislodged the CCHS Class of 1965 Rocket from that tall Georgia Pine...
The inert rocket motor shell was found by Caleb Jordan, 15 year-old grandson of Mike and Libby Jordan, who own the former Joiner home. It is GREAT that this "direct descendant" of the CCHS Classes of '65 and '66 had a part in recovering it.
Libby informs us that Caleb is going to return it to us for display in the Old School!!! What a fine young man!!!
THANKS CALEB!!! You are now an HONORARY MEMBER OF THE CLASS OF 1965!
